South Korean squad DAMWON Gaming emerged unbeaten from its opening day of group play Thursday, the only team to do so on Day 2 of the play-in stage of the League of Legends World Championship in Berlin.
DAMWON opened the day beating top-seeded Turkish team Royal Youth before besting top-seeded Brazilian squad Flamengo eSports later in the day.
Flamengo rounded out Group D play by beating Royal Youth to finish the day 1-1. Royal Youth reside at the bottom of the group at 0-2.
Group C saw the three teams go 1-1, with Hong Kong Attitude beating Thailand's MEGA, MEGA then beating Vietnamese/American squad Lowkey Esports, and Lowkey then getting the better of Hong Kong Attitude to close out the day.
The double-round-robin play-in stage has two more days remaining, with Groups A and B competing Friday and Groups C and D back in action Saturday.
The top two teams per group advance to Round 2, with the first-place teams from the group stage each facing a second-place team in best-of-five matches. The winners advance to the Main Event, which begins Oct. 12.
The Group Stage will include 16 teams again divided into four groups playing best-of-one matches in a double round-robin format. The top two teams from each group then advance to the Knockout Stage, which will be a single-elimination bracket.
While first-place teams will be pitted against second-place teams, no two teams from the same group can be placed in the same half of the bracket for the best-of-five matches.
