Suns trade Dudley, '21 pick to Nets for Arthur

The Brooklyn Nets acquired Jared Dudley and a 2021 second-round draft pick from the Phoenix Suns for forward Darrell Arthur on Friday.

Phoenix is now $3.2M below the cap after acquiring the $7.4M Darrell Arthur expiring contract. The room will increase once Arthur is likely bought out of his contract. The veteran has 10 years of service and his minimum exception with a new team would be $2.4M. The Suns will also have a Friday July 20th decision to guarantee the $1.4M contract of Davon Reed. The former second round pick currently has $689 guaranteed. Phoenix also has flexibility with the $1.4M non-guaranteed contract of Shaquille Harrison.

Here is the breakdown of the $158M rookie max extension for Devin Booker that starts in 2019-20: $27.3M, $29.4M, $31.6M, $33.8M and $36.0M. The Suns will lose $17.4M in cap space next year and now project to have $21M in room before first-round picks are factored in. The extension now has Booker with the poison pill restriction for the season. Despite losing some room next year, locking up a future All-Star is the right thing to do for a team that is looking to change the culture. The extension sends a strong message that both sides are willing to make a commitment long term.
