Sean McVay confirmed Sunday that LB Junior Galette will workout for the team Monday. "If things go well then there's a good possibility that we could sign him," McVay and linebackers coach Joe Barry have a history with Galette, 30, from Washington and defensive line coach Bill Johnson has a history with him from New Orleans. Galette was sidelined in 2015 and 2016 because of Achilles injuries. Last season he forced a fumble and had a sack in 16 games. Galette has been involved in several incidents off the field: In 2017, Galette was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct in Biloxi, Mississippi. In 2015, Galette was arrested, but charges were later dropped, in a domestic violence incident. The NFL suspended him two games. There's also a video from a beach scuffle in 2013 that appeared to show Galette striking a woman with a belt, though no charges were filed in the incident.

Is there chance that Jared Goff and Todd Gurley will not play in the preseason, along with most other starters? Sean McVay seems to think so. "I would say there's a possibility," McVay said. "But I think those guys both would tell you that they want to play." McVay did not play starters in Week 1 against the Ravens following two joint practices earlier in the week. They did not play in Week 2 against the Raiders, in large part because the teams will meet again in a season opener on Sept. 10. McVay often mentions that he would like to prevent injuries, but it seems players would like to get some preseason action before the season begins and it's well known starters don't play in Week 4. So maybe this week agains the Texans we'll finally get a look at the 2018 Rams. "I think being able to listen to those guys, understand kind of where they're coming from to get into a little bit of a rhythm, get out there, put some pads on where they can actually get tackled is something that we want to think about," McVay said.

After a strong performance in Week 1 of the preseason agains the Ravens, rookie running back John Kelly continued to impress against the Raiders. The sixth-round pick from Tennessee received a bulk of the carries, given starter Todd Gurley did not play and Justin Davis was sidelined because of a hamstring injury. Kelly rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown in 18 carries. "I was just happy to get the snaps," Kelly said. "Be out there to get the clicking with my teammates and everybody." Kelly took a handoff on fourth-and-two, fumbled as he crossed the goal line, but recovered his own fumble for a touchdown. "I was trying to pad the stats," he said, chuckling. It was once thought the Rams would only carry three running backs. But because several positions opened on special teams, it's possible they keep four.

Sean McVay said after a preseason victory over the Raiders that he saw "definite improvement" from backup quarterback Sean Mannion. Mannion completed 10-of-16 passes for 84 yards. He went three-and-out the first two series before completing a 17-yard pass to Michael Thomas to establish a rhythm. He later completed a 47-yard pass to KhaDarel Hodge. "Tough start a little bit, but I think the big play down the field to Hodge and then earlier on when he hit Mike Thomas off the play action on the deep in-breaking route – those were two big plays," McVay said. Mannion, who completed three-of-13 passes for 13 yards with an interception against the Ravens last week, said he felt ready to be inserted in a regular-season game, if the need arises. "The preseason is a great chance for everybody to get live reps and real game action," Mannion said, adding, "I absolutely feel comfortable going into a game if need be."

The Eagles are the best team in the NFL, per ESPN's Football Power Index. Changes to the vig on Philadelphia's season win total earlier this offseason bumped the defending champs over New England. However, the Patriots (17%) and Steelers (13%) remain more likely to win the Super Bowl than the Eagles (13%) because there are fewer contenders in the AFC. Note: these numbers were run before AJ McCarron's injury, which will affect the Bills' rating.

Sean McVay sat most of his starters for a second consecutive preseason game Saturday against the Oakland Raiders in an effort to prevent injuries and withhold competitive information given the teams meet again in a season opener on Sept. 10. After losing to the 49ers in Week 17 last season and a poor performance last week against the Ravens, quarterback Sean Mannion needed to prove he could bounce back and serve as a capable backup if called upon this season. Mannion demonstrated improvement, completing 10-of-16 passes for 84 yards, including a 47-yard strike to KhaDarel Hodge. He also completed a 17-yard pass to Michael Thomas, but the remainder of his throws went for eight yards or less. It remains uncertain if Mannion will be serviceable if inserted for Jared Goff.

It's unlikely Sean McVay will play starters Saturday in a Week 2 preseason game against the Oakland Raiders, which means backup quarterback Sean Mannion should have plenty of opportunity to redeem himself after a poor performance in Week 1. McVay said he'd look for "crisp execution" from the fourth-year pro. "Sean would be the first to tell you he should play better, but I think there were a lot of things that went into it," McVay said Thursday after the final training camp practice at UC Irvine. "Myself, obviously, some of the guys catching the football, protecting up front. So I just think you want to see more sharp, crisp execution, doing a good job recognizing what they're doing and then just being able to play sound football."

The Rams wrapped up training camp at UC Irvine on Thursday with morning practice that had a walk-thru portion as well as some brief 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 play. The standout player of the day was tight end Tyler Higbee. Higbee demonstrated improvement in the passing game throughout camp, but on Thursday he caught back-to-back passes for touchdowns during 7-on-7 red zone drills. The first was an impressive snag over Marqui Christina and Isaiah Johnson. Higbee emerge as a nice red zone target for Jared Goff this season.

Don't really get the sense anything is imminent between the Rams and Aaron Donald. They might be closer in numbers, but it doesn't appear like they're close enough for either side to give in. The staredown continues.

Quote of the day Wednesday comes courtesy of Sean McVay, who watched as OLB Samson Ebukam pushed LT Andrew Whitworth into Jared Goff (Accidentally) and Goff went to the ground: "To say I was holding my breath," McVay said chuckling, "I think it would be probably a little bit more than that."

Sean McVay said Wednesday that he hasn't decided if starters will play Saturday against the Raiders. However, it seems unlikely. McVay has expressed concern throughout training camp about the potential of injuries and with the Raiders, he's also mentioned maintaining competitive advantage, keeping in mind they meet again in a season opener on Sept. 10.

Wednesday didn't appear to be the sharpest day for the Rams' offense, but aside from a couple dropped passes, it looked to be more a function of the defense. Marqui Christian intercepted a pass by Jared Goff early in the 100-play workout, Marcus Peters dropped a would-be interception (The play could have also been ruled a sack prior to the pass), Samson Ebukam sacked Sean Mannion, Nickell Robey-Coleman had a nice breakup at the goal line on a Goff pass intended for Cooper Kupp and Ndamukong Suh kept the pressure on Goff the entire workout. Peters covered Brandin Cooks the majority of the time and Cooks was rarely targeted.

Went to Rams and Chargers camps today. They're both supremely talented on offense and defense. The biggest discrepancy is their kicking situation. Greg Zuerlein, coming off back surgery, nailed a 60-yard field goal with ease and looks totally healthy now. He might be the best kicker in the league again. For the Chargers, neither Caleb Sturgis nor Roberto Aguayo have separated themselves. Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said opening with two kickers on the active roster is "a possibility."

The Rams held a modified scrimmage (no tackling) for 90 minutes Wednesday, running about 100 plays - mostly starters vs. starters and backups vs. backups. Ndamukong Suh stood out. He batted down a pass, then later sacked Jared Goff twice. Suh has had a solid camp, but this is the first time he stole the show.
