Raiders keep adding to haul, bring on CB Apple

Eli Apple, who has shown both great potential and inconsistency while starting 51 games over his four-year career with the Giants and Saints, has reached a deal with the Raiders.

In agreeing to terms with Eli Apple, the Raiders are getting the big (6-foot-1, 203 pounds) and rangy cover corner they covet and he would figure to start opposite Trayvon Mullen. It also means the Raiders may be content to move on from Daryl Worley, or that if the re-sign him, he continues the transition into more of a hybrid safety-corner-linebacker. Apple is not exactly a ballhawk with 3 interceptions in four years, but Raiders CBs only had 3 INTs last season (Gareon Conley had one).

The Raiders placed tenders on three of their restricted free agents in linebacker Nicholas Morrow (second round), quarterback Nathan Peterman (fifth round) and offensive tackle David Sharpe (fourth round), the NFL announced Wednesday.

In agreeing to terms with Carl Nassib, the Raiders strengthened their outside pass rush, which saw rookies Maxx Crosby and Clelin Ferrell get 10 and 4.5 sacks, respectively. Nassib's versatility allows him to play DE in a 4-3 scheme, which is the Raiders' base, and OLB in a 3-4. Nassib had 6 sacks last season for the Buccaneers despite losing his starting gig to Jason Pierre-Paul in Week 9, and he had 6.5 sacks a year earlier. Nassib also forced 3 fumbles the last 2 years. Yeah, he's disruptive.

By agreeing to terms with S Jeff Heath, the Raiders added a potential starter to go with Johnathan Abram. But both are coming off shoulder surgeries and while Abram only played one game as a rookie, Heath is coming off only the second season of his seven-year career in which he did not have an INT. Still, he does have 8 picks in 106 games, 54 starts, and was a special teams standout for Raiders ST coach Rich Bisaccia in Dallas. And it was Heath who forced the Derek Carr end-zone fumble in 2017.

In agreeing to terms with defensive tackle Maliek Collins, the Raiders addressed the need for more interior pass rush. Collins, who played for new Raiders D-line coach Rod Marinelli in Dallas, has 14.5 sacks in 55 career games; Maurice Hurst and P.J. Hall have a combined 9 sacks, in 59 combined games. Plus, Collins had a career-high 30 pressures last season, along with his four sacks and a fumble recovery, despite being limited with foot and knee injuries. Yeah, Collins pushes the pocket.

In agreeing to terms with future Hall of Fame tight end (and former ESPN Monday Night Football analyst) Jason Witten, the Raiders get that prototypical “coach on the field” while adding invaluable experience to a position that was already one of strength. Or did you miss the breakout seasons authored by Darren Waller (90 catches for 1,145 yards) and rookie Foster Moreau (5 TDs in 13 games) in 2019? So long as the 11-time Pro Bowler has something in the tank, Waller and Moreau will benefit.

Why Witten didn't mesh with McCarthy, but is a great fit with Gruden (1:06)
