The Seahawks' practice report lists DL Michael Bennett (heel) as not participating today despite coach Pete Carroll saying yesterday that he likely would. Bennett said earlier in the day that he plans on playing Sunday against the Giants. He's dealing with what Carroll previously called a plantar fascia foot injury. CB Jeremy Lane, who hasn't played since injuring his groin in the first quarter of Week 4, also missed practice today.

The Seahawks are placing DE Cliff Avril on injured reserve, coach Pete Carroll told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Wednesday. Avril has been out since suffering a neck/spine injury in Week 4. He would have to miss at least eight weeks while on IR.

Seahawks DL Michael Bennett, who's dealing with a plantar fascia foot injury, said he plans on playing Sunday against the Giants.

Seahawks DL Michael Bennett said the discussions between NFL players and the league need to start with Colin Kaepernick getting an opportunity to play. Bennett said that was brought up in the meetings on Tuesday.

Seahawks DL Michael Bennett says he plans to sit for the national anthem going forward. Bennett began sitting during the anthem at the start of the preseason and did so through the first two-regular-season games. The Seahawks remained in the locker room during the anthem in Week. Bennett and the rest of Seattle's defensive line sat in Week 4 and all players stood in Week 5. Frank Clark said after that game that the defensive linemen who sat during the anthem the week prior decided to stand to honor the victims of the Las Vegas shootings

Seahawks rookie DL Malik McDowell, who's been out since suffering a concussion in an ATV accident before training camp, was cleared to begin conditioning work two weeks ago, Pete Carroll said. Carroll said recently that the team hasn't ruled out the possibility of its top draft playing at some point this season, but McDowell remains a long ways away from returning to the field. "It's a slow process to get him back out here," Carroll said. "He hasn't done anything for months. We're being very careful, of course, but it's a good sign for him.”

Richard Sherman said the efforts of NFL players to promote social change shouldn't be discredited because they're wealthy: "Seven years ago, I had negative $45 in my account. What was I then? I'm still a black guy. I'm still a kid from the hood, and we will never forget those moments."

Sherman: Wealth shouldn't mitigate activism

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman says NFL players' social activism shouldn't be discounted because of athletes' relative wealth and privilege.

More of what Richard Sherman said about how Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned after some teams lost their starting quarterbacks to injuries: "No, I'm not that surprised. This league is odd in that way. I think they had a point to make and they made it." Sherman said he doesn't buy the idea that Kaepernick is unsigned because he may be a poor fit in some offenses, saying there are employed quarterbacks who are "terrible in any system." Sherman: "Then you hear these coaches and scouts that are like, 'Well, we didn't like him coming out of college.' People didn't like Tom Brady coming out of college; he went in the sixth round. These people aren't know-it-alls. They don't know everything. These scouts don't know everything. Aaron Rodgers fell to 24. How many people would turn around and regret that decision. People should be losing their jobs because they're idiots. You've heard every excuse in the book for why he doesn't have a job, but you see what it is. They've agreed not to get him a job and it is what it is." Sherman said he thinks Kaepernick will have a hard time winning his grievance against the NFL over alleged collusion.

Last week, Richard Sherman visited a Tacoma, Wash. hospital to surprise a young girl named Ellie, who was upset that she had misplaced her beloved "Shermie" doll. "I think she lifted my spirits more that I lifted hers," he said. "She was such a happy-go-lucky little girl, every time she turned around, she was glowing and smiling and laughing, and then her and my kids were having a good-old time. They didn't have a care in the world, so it was a good time, man. I didn't really think about it as being a big deal, they kind of filmed it and everything and made it a big deal, but it was just cool to hang out with her and see her and try to brighten her day a little bit." Sherman said the Seahawks are bringing Ellie to their next home game.

One reason why the Seahawks plan to play both Mark Glowinski and Ethan Pocic on Sunday, according to offensive line coach Tom Cable, is that neither have played enough of late to be in shape for a full game. Pocic has only played special teams while Glowinski has been inactive the last three games. They're now competing to replace Luke Joeckel at left guard. "Let's tag-team it there and as we go through this off time with Luke, we'll figure out what's best," Cable said.

What will the Seahawks' offensive line lose with Luke Joeckel out? "A lot of experience, a really good player," O-line coach Tom Cable said. "You could argue that he's been the most consistent, solid guy for us through five games." Cable said Mark Glowinski and Ethan Pocic, who are competing to replace Joeckel at left guard, will both play Sunday against the Giants. He didn't reveal which of them will start.

Seahawks sans Joeckel for at least a month

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is hoping Luke Joeckel can return from knee surgery in four to five weeks. "Maybe that's possible and maybe that isn't," Carroll said.

Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin, wearing a T-shirt with "EQUALITY" on the front, said it was important for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to co-sign their letter expressing support for a bill that seeks criminal justice reform. Baldwin: "It was important that it wasn't just coming from myself. I think, again, the important aspect of it is us having a unified effort. We don't want to be divided anymore. We don't want to continue with this divisive rhetoric. We don't want to engage with this divisive rhetoric. We want to start showing our players, the NFL itself, our NFL community that we can be collectively united to seek the changes that we want to see, which are beneficial to the entirety of society. So I thought it was important that we didn't do this as individuals but we did it as a collective group."

Seahawks CB Richard Sherman again expressed his displeasure that Colin Kaepernick is still unsigned: "You've heard every excuse in the book for why he doesn't have a job, but you see what it is. They've agreed not to give him a job."

Brady Henderson ESPN

Asked about the Seahawks' interest in free-agent LT Branden Albert, Pete Carroll said they met with him for a while but couldn't come to an agreement on anything.

Pete Carroll said the plan is for DL Michael Bennett to practice Wednesday. He's dealing with a plantar fascia foot injury from the Rams game.

Pete Carroll said LG Luke Joeckel could be out 4-5 weeks following the arthroscopic procedure he had on his knee last week. Asked about the plan to replace him, Carroll first mentioned Mark Glowinski but said rookie second-round pick Ethan Pocic is working there as well. Carroll said he wouldn't be surprised if they both play against the Giants.
