Senators

NHL

Eugene Melnyk, owner of the Ottawa Senators, used the NHL 100 Classic outdoor game this weekend as a bully pulpit for a relocation threat. Melnyk told the assembled media on Parliament Hill on Friday that the team "could look good somewhere else" if it "becomes a disaster." Melnyk, who has owned the team since 2003 and is searching for a new downtown arena, said the market has yet to prove itself as viable. He also talked finances, proclaiming the Senators have one of the "thinnest" managerial staffs in the NHL and hinting at cutting back player spending, with franchise star Erik Karlsson up for free agency in Summer 2019. Oh, and he proclaimed he wouldn't sell the team: "Imagine if you own a McDonalds franchise, but you can move it. Why would you sell it? It's something that's very difficult to buy. We're doing OK here. Not great, but OK." What an embarrassment for Gary Bettman and the NHL on the final weekend of its year-long centennial celebration to have one of their outdoor extravaganza's participants detracting from it like this.
